Can you still find frogs to eat?

March 31, 2009 - "Can you still find frogs to eat?" By Joseph Parish. I recently read that the high demand for frog legs for human consumption has been making these creatures a bit on the scarce side. It appears that there is a vast decline in frog population in the wild due to over exploitation of them for foods both in America and Europe. It will not be long before the number of catches that you can have will be limited. In fact I fully expect that you will be required to have a Frog license just the same as a fishing license is currently required. Click here

Toxic Ziploc Omelet Procedure

March 22, 2009 - "Toxic Ziploc Omelet procedure" By Joseph Parish. I recently came across several people suggesting a procedure that I have listed in this article as dangerous. This article was written by me in February of 2008. I thought in view of what is currently circulating around the net now it would be a good time to repost it. Click here

But I don't have a dehydrator

March 12, 2009 - "But I don’t have a dehydrator" By Joseph Parish. You perhaps may already be familiar with various ways to preserve food such as by canning, freezing or making jelly. If so you are in for an overwhelming surprise as you try to dehydrate your next year’s garden foods. Drying food is not difficult and the final product can certainly be a valuable asset to your kitchen foods. I have often heard people make excuses that “I can’t dry those foods because I do not have a dehydrator”. Click here

Rhubarb Lamb Rub Jelly

March 8, 2009 - "Rhubarb Lamb Rub Jelly" By Joseph Parish. Every Easter my grandfather would make his lamb and without failure he would coat it with mint jelly. Needless to say I grew to dislike mint jelly greatly. As an adult I figured it was high time to come up with something a bit different then that which my grandfather used so I now use a Rhubarb jelly to do what the mint jelly did previously. Click here

Homemade Cat Food

March 7, 2009 - "Homemade cat food" By Joseph Parish. Many people have to make provisions to tend to their pets when TSHTF so here is one idea for the feline sector. It was not unusual for my wife to awaken early in the morning and make our shar pei dogs Bubba and Bubbles a warm breakfast of oatmeal. This was just about a daily experience for these dogs. Bubba and Bubbles are now gone and we no longer have dogs to cater to. Click here

February 22, 2009 - "Butter when you need it" By Joseph Parish. During extreme times of crisis and under emergency conditions you can certainly bet that you will not find any sort of butter in your local food stores. Butter will tend to become a valuable commodity in those particular times. Click here

Saving Food by use of Oxygen Absorbers

February 17, 2009 - "Saving food by use of Oxygen absorbers" By Joseph Parish. All true survivalists have found that at one time or another they have encountered various problems relating to their food storage. Perhaps they merely run out of space or even worse their containers of grin became buggy. We can’t do much about the first problem but there is plenty that we can do concerning the later one. Kitchen Sprouter

January 29, 2008 - "Kitchen Sprouter" Having looked carefully at all the commercial kitchen sprouter that are on the market I decided that prior to purchasing a store bought unit that I would try to make my own. I felt it would be very simple to take a mason jar, a rubber band and some cheese cloth and construct my own. click here

The Survival Pantry

January 24, 2009 - "The Survival Pantry" I came across this post over at the Simple Dollar today and it got me thinking about one of the most important parts of the survivalist's home, the pantry. Many people think about food preps as a separate entity from day to day living. In your food stores you may have bags of rice, bags of wheat, and a vat of cooking oil, but it is the items contained in your pantry that will pull the stored items together to make a meal. Having a full pantry also means that you never have to run to the store at the last minute or order out because "there is nothing to eat". Here's the items that I keep in my pantry and which I also keep back ups of in my survival food supplies. Click here

A Delightful Lemon Tainted Bread

January 21, 2009 - "A delightful Lemon Tainted Bread" By Joseph Parish. As most people who are familiar with me know I enjoy making and experimenting with various types of homemade bread ranging from flatbreads fried in a skillet to those complete loaves made in a bread machine. In view of my last article on preserving lemons I thought I would also add my recipe for bread that includes a touch of lemon. Click here

Just Any Thermometer Won't Do

January 19, 2009 - "Just Any Thermometer Won’t Do" By Joseph Parish. A visit to your local kitchen gadget store will quickly make you realize that there is more then one type of thermometer that you can purchase for your kitchen tasks. It doesn’t matter whether the thermometer that you are buying will be used in your refrigerator or in your oven as you bake that next turkey dinner, they all have their similarities as well as their differences. Thermometers are basically a tool that you use in food preparation to ensure that you prepare a safe and well cooked meal. Click here

Citrus all year round

January 18, 2009 - "Citrus all year round" By Joseph Parish. I like to garbage garden as I call it. I will take sees that one would normally toss into the trash and plant them. The majority of the time I have a certain degree of success in growing these plants. One of them that I usually do very well with is lemons and oranges. Most citrus fruits are similar to what I am about to say. Click here

An Abundance of Pemmican Recipes

January 7, 2009 - "An Abundance of Pemmican Recipes" by Joseph Parish. I couldn't pass up writing an article of my own on this great survival food. Pemmican is traditionally considered a travel type of food that was popular with the Native North Americans. It generally consisted of slices of buffalo meat or lean venison that had been previously sun dried, then pounded into a paste and finally packed with a mixture of melted fat. This food was then stored in small rawhide bags until needed. Fruits such as wild berries or dried currants were often added to the paste while creating it. Click here
